Why This Certificate Is Different
The CFI oral covers everything that came before it, and the ability to teach it.
Fundamentals of Instructing
Do you understand how people learn? The FOI covers the learning process, motivation, memory, lesson planning, assessment, and the characteristics of an effective instructor.
CFI-Initial Oral
Can you teach it? The DPE asks you to explain a concept- then asks how you would teach it to a student who is struggling. Both questions require preparation. These 303 cards address both.
Building professional instructional competency
CFIs who understand the FOI at an application level, not just a rote level, are more effective instructors. These cards build the knowledge that makes your instruction better and more effective, not just sufficient for the checkride.
Study Strategy
Start every card in the New section. When you can answer it without flipping the card, move it to Review. Once you can explain the complete answer accurately, confidently, and without prompting, move it to Checkride Ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the FOI section on these cards or do I need a separate resource?
Is the FOI section on these cards or do I need a separate resource?
The FOI is fully covered. The Fundamentals of Instructing section is the first and most extensive section in this deck — covering human behavior and learning, the learning process, memory and forgetting, transfer of learning, motivation and human needs, the teaching process, lesson planning, assessment, and instructor responsibilities. Every ACS-required FOI element is addressed.
How are these different from practice test apps for the CFI?
How are these different from practice test apps for the CFI?
Practice test apps test recognition, you select the correct answer from a list. The CFI oral tests verbal recall at an instructional level, you produce the answer and explain it. No app replicates that cognitive task. These cards force retrieval before you see the answer, and the Checkride Ready standard requires being able to explain the answer, not just state it.
Do these cover the technical subjects or just the FOI?
Do these cover the technical subjects or just the FOI?
Both. The deck covers the full CFI ACS, Fundamentals of Instructing, technical subject areas, preflight preparation, maneuver lesson planning, endorsements, pilot qualifications, airworthiness, weather, cross-country planning, airspace, and emergency operations. The FOI and technical subjects are in separate color-coded sections so you can work on each independently.
Are these useful after the CFI checkride?
Are these useful after the CFI checkride?
Yes. Newly certificated CFIs use the FOI and endorsement sections to prepare ground lessons, stay current on instructional concepts, and reference the regulatory requirements for student endorsements. CFIs pursuing CFII or MEI will find the FOI content directly applicable to those oral exams as well.
